this entry might not be a pleasant read to the gentlemen but trust me, it’s beneficial in understanding the opposite gender..so spare some time to read this gentlemen..and for the ladies too..sometimes we just could not figure out what’s going on or what’s wrong with our anatomy..(p/s: usop or pendi, aku nk ckp psl menstrual cramp, btol ke aku gne anatomy dlm ayat aku..?sile reply dgn pantas..)

well i got this idea of writing about menstrual pain because i experience it almost everytime i have my menstrual period, including today..and trust me, it’s never a pleasant experience..

so i googled about this unpleasant ‘unwellness’ just to keep me busy so i don’t focus so much on the pain, and here’s what i found..


scientifically, what i’m experiencing is called ‘Dysmenorrhea’ or menstrual cramp..menstrual cramps are pains in the abdominal (belly) and pelvic areas that are experienced by a woman as a result of her menstrual period…menstrual cramps can range from mild to quite severe..mild menstrual cramps may be barely noticeable and of short duration, sometimes felt just as a sense of light heaviness in the belly..severe menstrual cramps can be so painful that they interfere with a woman’s regular activities for several days..

and i agree with the last sentence above..menstrual cramp has always been the reason for my absentees in classes and disabilities in going through the day hassle-free..there’s one time when i was in literature class, i was so annoyed and restless with the cramp, and thought that i wanted to skip my tutorial just after the class..to even swing my mood swing at that moment, i realised that i’d used all the exeptions to tutorials (we were allowed to skip 3 tutorials without being penalised)..meaning, i need to attend the tutorials by any how..or if i skip, i’ll be penalised..but i was determined at that time and didn’t bother about having my result degraded by one grade..


so i went on..looking for the reasons why am i experiencing this..and this is what i found..so much like reading back my biology text book..the explanation is long..(p/s: usop and pendi, bleh x aku buang je explanation yg 1st paragraph kt bwh ni..?kne ke tules lengkap2 cm jwb exam..?)

Each month, the inner lining of the uterus (the endometrium) builds up in preparation for a possible pregnancy. After ovulation, if the egg is not fertilized by a sperm, no pregnancy will result and the current lining of the uterus is no longer needed. The woman’s estrogen and progesterone hormone levels decline, and the lining of the uterus becomes swollen and dies. It is then shed and will be replaced by a new lining in the next monthly cycle.

When the old uterine lining begins to break down, molecular compounds called prostaglandins are released. These compounds cause the muscles of the uterus to contract. When the uterine muscles contract, they constrict the blood supply (vasoconstriction) to the endometrium. This contraction blocks the delivery of oxygen to the tissue of the endometrium which, in turn, breaks down and dies. After the death of this tissue, the uterine contractions literally squeeze the old endometrial tissue through the cervix and out of the body by way of the vagina. Other substances known as leukotrienes, which are chemicals that play a role in the inflammatory response, are also elevated at this time and may be related to the development of menstrual cramps.

also, here’s the circumstances that may make a woman more likely to experience menstrual cramps:

  • She started her first period at an early age (younger than 11 years).
  • Her menstrual periods last 5 days or longer.
  • She is overweight or obese.
  • She smokes cigarettes or uses alcohol.
  • She has never been pregnant.
  • She lacks exercise.

the last one..bi..don’t you think that is so true to me..?haha..but you are forbidden to say yes for that..la la la..neway, since i have no idea on how to control leukotrienes (so i might reduce the pain if i can control it), i think i need to exercise more..hu~at least i know that menstrual cramp is not something harmful to my question of ‘what’s wrong with me..?’eventhough it can be harmful..but i chose to not to think about it..ignorance is bliss..

and now more things cloud up in my mind..about PMS..about pampering vs spoiling..everything is related to period..but no..i wont write about these..not now..

    ak rase btol jek the usage of that term – menstrual cramp.

    2nd, the 1st para tuh kte sume dh blaja dh pon time skul dlu..but, i’d rather just leave it on there coz some of us might have forgotten those facts~ =)
    it really helps to make sense in further explanation in d 2nd para~

    may i suggest the term ‘anatomy’ to be replaced with ‘body’? hahahaha..yea i know it sounds simple but i think thts d best~ =)

    anyways,i second pendi about using the word ‘body’ rather than ‘anatomy’…it does feel a bit weird…

    just my 2 cents,
    pain is a perception mechanism which is rallied via the nerve to the brain…exercise stimulate endorphin secretion(endorphin is an endogenous analgesic-pain suppressor)which acts on the nerve that send pain signal to the brain…that act explain exercise helps to reduce the pain and is not harmful during menstruation..
